'I stood there at the phone box, looking at the number, and eventually i plucked up the courage to call. The very calm, warm-voiced woman who answered waited while i sobbed into the phone for several minutes.'

'As i waited for her i leaned back in my armchair and felt my eyes closing. The room felt warm and safe.'

'I knew i could trust any volunteer i spoke to and while they gently encouraged me to get help i never felt out of control with them. During my worst times i spoke to them two or three times a day and the support they gave me during my darkest moments undoubtedly stopped me from killing myself'

'The Samaritans promised me total confidentiality and that allowed me to trust them. Disturbing as they no doubt found my story, they never showed it. They were always there for me and promised me that they wouldn't alert the authorities or tell anyone without my permission.'

'When i was self-harming i didn't want anyone to try and solve the problem: I just wanted them to say: "Tell me how you feel and I'll be with you while you're feeling like this"'

'The Samaritans became my lifeline. I have no doubt that i am alive today because of the support they gave me'

A Sanctuary is a place of refuge or protection. This piece of work invites you to explore the idea of sanctuary and think about your places of refuge. For me, the sea is my security, my confidant without judgement. Its ever changing nature brings life to the vastness in-front of me, inviting me into conversation with it. The calm and tranquil aesthetics of these images encourage you to get lost at sea, lost in your own thoughts.

These images represent the beginning of a life long project exploring the essence of the human spirit and its relationship with nature.

I left my heart in Berlin!

These images are a few from a series I produced about my trip to Berlin in March. We were only there for a few days but i fell in love with the place. I would definitely like to return in the near future! These images were taken in 'East Berlin' concentrating on the street art and decay of the buildings. This city has so much character and i don't think i saw a sad or moody face the entire time! Thumbs up to Berlin! 35mm

Culture of Nature

These images are the finals from my latest project at uni. I photographed the models with my Zenza Bronica ETRSi and printed the images. I then laid the the foliage on top of the prints and re-photographed for the final images. My review went really well and i got positive feedback from fellow students... now waiting for the final mark!

Brilliant Mistakes

These images are the result of trying out my Kershaw Penguin for the first time and making a mistake in the film processing. I accidentally measured the amount of developer for 35mm instead of 120 and so while agitating the bubbles made an imprint across the photos. However i am pleased with the aesthetics achieved here, something i that would never happen if i tried!

Constructed Realities: Fictions

With this title i decided to base my studio project around a recurring dream i have had over the last year or so. I took the story out of its fictitious state and represented it in the reality of the studio. The sequence is constructed physically rather than mentally, unfortunately i couldn't get a smoke machine to show the fog surrounding the subjects.

This dream is set in a forrest or garden, with a very hazy atmosphere. Glimpsing through the mist there is a young girl who stands in the centre of this botanical scene holding a shining orb. The complexity of time is very apparent in these dreams, flicking back and forth, as if in confusion of reality. The numbers 0, 2, 9, 5, 6, 9 and 8 fly around the forrest, in some sort of dance. As she plays with this sphere, twirling it around her head and up in the air, a nymph enters the scene and takes it from the girl. Now the nymph is the centre of this escapade, and the girl is know-where to be seen. On occasions the girl has try to speak just before the nymph appears, however i cannot make out what is trying to be said... The rest of this dream is in silence.

So starting the catch up of images from the latter half of 2009 is this set of images i took in late July. For 10 days, I was staying in a beautiful house just 5 miles from Essaouira, celebrating a special friends 50th birthday. From the 3 films i took on my holga these were amongst the few that came out as it turns out my holga was broken.

Essaouira is an isolated town on the coast of Morocco where Jimi Hendrix and Bob Marley liked to hang out. And i can see why; It is a perfect spot to unwind, eat great seafood and absorb the culture; The medina is home to many small arts and crafts businesses and where Orson Welles filmed scenes of his 1952 classic version of "Othello". The Gnaoua Festival of World Music is held here every year and yet Essaouira has never really become a tourist trap. The narrow streets discourage cars, making it look much as it did in the days of sea pirates.

The Big Freeze!

To kick start 2010 we have had an icy blast of snow cover the uk. I've never seen so much snow and so of course the celebrations began with snowball fights, homemade sledges and building of snow structures. Then comes the time that you need to get food, do work and travel from A to B... which is impossible and a very depressing time in these conditions. I have always been fascinated with snowflakes and icicles so now that they are all around me I can use this opportunity to show the beauty behind this so called 'bad' weather.

Happy New year!

Over the last week i have had a kick up the butt over my work attitude and social life, as you can see the has not been much activity on here lately and i aim to change that. Im going to put 100% into my uni course and stop putting social events first. Due to the lack of a scanner and very poor internet connection i have a back log of photos yet to be uploaded for you all to see from as far back as July... so over the next couple weeks i will be showing you work from the later half of 2009 and then onto a fresh start and a new attitude towards photography and my career.

These images are from a medium format introduction at uni, just a mini shoot with fellow students. Lots of fun! Last image in the series was taken by me of Matt Gillespie. The quality of these images is quite poor due to the scratched scanners in the library, the real print look lovely on my wall though.

The images in these three posts are from my Final Major Project at college. This was a documentary project of my relationship which was going through some strain! It is believed the best pictures are taken with some form of physical or emotional attatchment to the subject, as Robert Capa famously said "If your pictures aren't good enough, Your not close enough" You can portray the feeling and thoughts of a person well without knowing them yourself. So we turn the camera inward on our lives!

Over the past few months i have been photographing on a circular route of Bodmin Moor. This land is constantly changing due to human activity, wildlife movement and natural forces. After looking at the work of Fay Godwin and Bill Brandt, who both photographed the British Landscape, i decided i wanted to capture the natural beauty of this land using black and white medium format film. This takes my images out of the reality; dispensing with the colour ranges of the real experience concentrates on the tones and shapes withing the image. These images are examples of abstract forms being created by weather conditions, such damage can be done to the landscape and yet over time it can be changed into something beautiful. In the next post will be broader images of the different forms surrounding the moors, they also show how weather has changed the hard rugged rocks into smooth sculptures standing strong and proud over the ever changing land.

This is a short art-based film created in response to a piece of music called "Hands" by the contemporary electronic band "Four-Tet". I was working with 2 friends on the piece of music who created their own film to fit in before and after this. Film was taken on a mini DV tape using the Canon Mv830i and edited using Final Cut Express HD. The quality has been reduced some what for upload.

Using Canon 20D, all shot on ISO 100, 1/250 sec at F/4.5. I used Blue filters over the backlights to bring out a pale blue backdrop... leaving parts of the light uncovered to reveal varying tones. The band wanted something different to the usual "band portraits" and so suggested green lighting for themselve, which they loved the idea of.
